Our Vision

We believe reading should spark something — not just teach a skill.

The Mbife Foundation started with one simple idea: every child in The Gambia deserves a book that feels like theirs — stories that sound like home, characters that look like them, and a space where curiosity and imagination come first.

We're a young team, mostly under 25, and largely women-led — we run this the way we'd want it run for us: hands-on, community-first, no gatekeeping.

We show up in libraries, classrooms, mosques, and church halls, because a reading culture has to live everywhere a community already gathers.

We team up with schools, NGOs, and businesses who believe what we believe.

And we're building something we hope grows way past us — a whole generation that grows up loving books, telling stories, and seeing themselves in them.

Nation of readers, nation of leaders. That's the whole idea.

What drives us:

  • Books should spark imagination and creativity first, skills second

  • Reading in your own language and culture hits different

  • Every space — is a reading space

  • Young people and women are leading this, not just included in it

  • We can't do this alone, and we don't want to

  • Every child gets in, no exceptions
